Introduction to the History

by Daniel Jabe

The History section is a companion to the Galleries, serving to give those who are interested in reading history about the Boy Scouts in the 1910s an opportunity to do so. This section is not an exhaustive treatment of the subject. Instead, it contains only a few articles, of varying lengths, on small topics of interest relating to Boy Scouting during the 1910s. I wrote some of them myself, but many were written by other Scouting historians from various parts of the country and the world.

If there is a focal point to this History section, it is the Cultural History of Boy Scouting in America, 1910-1919, which I wrote in 1998. It is the longest article in the section, and the one that most develops the general theme of the museum, which is to chart the meteoric rise of the BSA during the 1910s.

I greatly encourage you to spend some time reading these articles, and hope that they enrich your experience when viewing the items on display in the Galleries.
